I’ve recently become a great fan for supporting organizations that help push women in business and life. In this article, I’ll describe 3 major organizations that I find extremely inspirational.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
My interest in women studies resulted from my volunteer experience at Dress for Success
Charlotte. As an international nonprofit organization, Dress for Success serves to provide interview appropriate clothing and career development support to women in poverty located in cities across the United States, United Kingdom, and New Zealand.
Through my own research, I embarked on a journey to assist with the reestablishment of Dress for Success Charlotte. My design skills prepared me for the creation of DFS Charlotte flyers. My writing and proofreading experience prepared me for the tasks of assisting with phone, mail, and email correspondence. And, with my organizational skills, I felt well prepared for coordinating all volunteer information, including the volunteer database, questionnaires, and inquiries. We also hosted the 2nd Annual Look at Her Power Event with Guest Speaker and Loreal Spokesmodel Andie MacDowell.
After expressing my faith in every woman’s ability to be self-sufficient and successful in her career, I decided to continue my support towards women’s issues. Check out your local branch near you! If you have any interview clothing that you would like to donate, visit DressforSuccess.org.
CENTRAL ASIA INSTITUTE
3 years ago I met Greg Mortenson, the co-author of the #1 NY Times Best Seller Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace, One School At A Time, in Charlotte, NC. I was volunteering for his lecture at a local university. Greg Mortenson travels the world to share his insight and photography to promote awareness of the importance of education and cross-cultural understanding about the remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson combines his unique background with his knowledge of the developing world to promote peace with books, not bombs, and successfully bring education and hope to remote communities. Meet Greg Mortenson on his tour! Learn more about the mission of Central Asia Institute and how it supports community-based education, especially for girls.
PINK MAGAZINE
Two years ago, I did an internship at Pink Magazine. What a
great art and marketing experience because of the organization’s main concept! “PINK exists to promote this new generation of women who are making a significant impact on the world through their work and their lives, “ says Cynthia Good, Founding editor and CEO, Pink Magazine. At Pink I helped prepare for Pink’s 2008 Conference Series. It was held in cities such as LA, Washington, DC, New York City, Boston, Chicago, and of course, Atlanta, GA! I also worked on creating design solutions for layouts, articles, and online material. Once I completed my internship, they were able to launch their new website-a new online business community to help women connect with other professional globally to achieve greater success in your work and in your life. After all, “PINK represents more than a color,” says Cynthia Good. “It’s a badge of honor celebrating a global mission of equity and opportunity- a movement acknowledging all that women are today and will be tomorrow.
