This Weekend’s Geekend: Geek your way to a job
This weekend I was traveling through Savannah. Every store, museum, and restaurant had these small 4×6 flyers of robots and the word, GEEKEND: Get Your Geek On, which was definitely brought to my attention.
Geekend is the interactive conference phenomenon you have been waiting your whole life for. Geekend is your chance to interact with people taking the tech and creative industries by storm.
Mission: to bring together the brightest geeks, designers, artists, social media mavericks and forward thinking
entrepreneurs.
During November 4-6, 2010 the brightest geeks, designers, developers, artists, and social media mavericks took flight for a weekend filled with cutting edge speakers, fun-filled after parties, and amazing networking opportunities. This year the event was held in Savannah, which was later tagged “Hostess City with the Mostess” due to it’s melting pot for some of the country’s most in-demand trendsetters. The city is a thriving culture of creativity and “geeks run this town” says Geekend. Nicknamed the “Creative Coast,” Savannah produces creative talent from its base of 49,000 students, many of whom focus on art, design, and technology. The creative juices are always flowing in Savannah, making it the ideal location to geek out.
While I was reading my Sunday Savannah Morning News, I noticed the front-page headline, “Geek your way to a job.” This article written by Adam Van Brimmer describes how the Geekend’s panel “talks up value of social media to job seeks and employers.” Job seeks are utilizing social media to search for, research companies, and in some cases even apply for jobs, while employers continue to expose their companies news, achievements, and updates on blogs, videos, and networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.
