Cleveland Indians Taking Social Networking to a Whole New Level
Author: John Basso
The Cleveland Indians are not breaking many attractive records as of late but they are however number one in something. They are the first team in any major sport to develop a social media only section in their home park Progressive Field. The section, which was located in left field last year, is now being moved to the suite boxes for the 2011 season and has been named Indians Social Suite.
Fans who participate on social media sites will be invited to the suites on a game by game basis. Fans need to fill out an application in order to get a chance to attend. The Indians are also inviting bloggers to the suite who at times tend to bash the team in their websites.
The club’s PR Department feels whether an article is positive or negative, they can still build a strong relationship with their fans. It has been known that other team’s social media departments seek out bloggers who criticize their team, then try to intimidate them in an effort to get them to stop writing bad articles.
The Indians feel that society’s most popular way to communicate with each other is through social media websites. This is a perfect way for the team to reach out to their fans. In an effort to keep this program strong, the Indians are offering discounted tickets to all fans that follow their teams on Facebook and Twitter.
Furthermore they will be using the MLBTV AT Bat 2011 application in the ballpark. This application allows fans to watch any game live on their smart phones. This will also allow fans to receive discounted items on concessions and memorabilia.

This weekend I was traveling through Savannah. Every store, museum, and restaurant had these small 4×6 flyers of robots and the word, GEEKEND: Get Your Geek On, which was definitely brought to my attention.
Geekend is the interactive conference phenomenon you have been waiting your whole life for. Geekend is your chance to interact with people taking the tech and creative industries by storm.
Mission: to bring together the brightest geeks, designers, artists, social media mavericks and forward thinking
entrepreneurs.
During November 4-6, 2010 the brightest geeks, designers, developers, artists, and social media mavericks took flight for a weekend filled with cutting edge speakers, fun-filled after parties, and amazing networking opportunities. This year the event was held in Savannah, which was later tagged “Hostess City with the Mostess” due to it’s melting pot for some of the country’s most in-demand trendsetters. The city is a thriving culture of creativity and “geeks run this town” says Geekend. Nicknamed the “Creative Coast,” Savannah produces creative talent from its base of 49,000 students, many of whom focus on art, design, and technology. The creative juices are always flowing in Savannah, making it the ideal location to geek out.
While I was reading my Sunday Savannah Morning News, I noticed the front-page headline, “Geek your way to a job.” This article written by Adam Van Brimmer describes how the Geekend’s panel “talks up value of social media to job seeks and employers.” Job seeks are utilizing social media to search for, research companies, and in some cases even apply for jobs, while employers continue to expose their companies news, achievements, and updates on blogs, videos, and networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.
